Letter to the Editor from Mark and Tamara Masarik

We are supporting Lauren McLean for Mayor of Boise. We have known Lauren since she first moved to Boise almost 20 yrs ago and have interacted with her in many circles including the Boise Foothills Levy campaign, conservation organizations, and most recently at her "listening sessions" as Boise City Council president.

I know some are torn in this election. I understand. I’ve voted for Dave Bieter four times. But 16 years is a long time and Boise’s challenges are changing rapidly. We need a leader with a new vision and fresh ideas, free from the baggage of the past.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Lauren McLean for over five years. She's an excellent leader, a hard-working mom and neighbor, someone who treats others with dignity and respect, even when she doesn’t agree with them, and a champion on causes we care about. She loves Boise, and has always fought to protect the best things about this place, in particular our foothills and open spaces.

Lauren doesn't protect the status quo: she focuses on what's possible.

When a smart, accomplished woman who shares our values steps up to lead? We should support her! I’m thrilled to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with such a woman: Lauren McLean. Lauren’s quiet tenacity, deep love for Boise, and willingness to listen to all sides of an issue is exactly the kind of leadership we need in this pivotal moment. I know first-hand the challenges of governing and building consensus around complicated things like transportation and conservation. I think Lauren has exactly the kind of attitude that will make consensus possible. Please join me in voting for Lauren this November 5: she’s ready to listen, lead, and bring next-generation vision to City Hall!

As someone who represented Boise for eight years in the Idaho Statehouse, I know my neighbors and people all across the city are struggling. Boiseans are feeling impacts of growth and rising costs. They've rejected Dave Bieter’s proposals for a massive stadium, a punitive homelessness policy, and recruiting F-35s to our city, especially since the planes impact affordable housing and schools in modest income neighborhoods. It’s clear the Mayor’s power to fund and push forward these projects hasn’t been transparent.

Over the last 30 years, I have seen many changes to the town that I love. I know that we can maintain what we all love about Boise while tackling the challenges we now face in innovative ways. But Coles and Bieter and have had their chances: it’s time for a new mayor and new energy. I believe Lauren McLean is the person for the job.

When I campaigned with Lauren McLean during her first race in 2011, I witnessed a level of drive, dedication, and grit that in my opinion is rare in our modern politics. Her passion for finding solutions to tough problems and eagerness to listen to the people regardless of their points of view makes her a very effective leader. Her work on a multitude of issues and initiatives throughout two decades of community service has helped Boise become one of the best cities in the nation.

When I first met Lauren McLean, I was a volunteer spokesperson campaigning for a Boise School District bond. She asked some very tough questions regarding construction impact on each neighborhood, maintaining safe walking and biking routes for students, and how these changes might impact families. What struck me then, and sticks with me today is McLean’s ability to grasp the big picture needs, as well as the complexity of possible solutions, and fearlessly chase down answers.

It’s hard to fathom how you can question the leadership and readiness of someone with Lauren McLean’s credentials and proven track record. And how better to show leadership than to go against the grain, run for mayor, and provide voters with an alternative, especially when you risk the kind of mean-spirited, untruthful comments from her own colleagues that she has? Making that choice – risking her career and those critical relationships within her own party – that actually is leadership.
