Voting FAQs

  • Effective July 2023, voters who are registering to vote for the first time or updating their voter registration must provide one of the approved proof of residency documents to complete the registration process. Check out this additional information if the address on your ID or driver’s license does not match your current address.

  • Yes! If you request an absentee ballot and decide you’d like to vote in person, you can take your ballot into your polling place and they will give you a new ballot to vote there.

  • You need to sign your ballot envelope before you turn it in!

Once you sign, you can put it in the mail (and get it in as soon as possible - ballots have to be in hand at Ada County Elections by the time the polls close. Ballots postmarked by November 7 will not count if the Elections office doesn’t have them.)

If you want to hand-deliver it (or if you run out of time), you can turn it into one of the secure election drop boxes at Ada County Elections on Benjamin, or at the drop boxes outside the City Halls in Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, or Star. Any Ada County voter can turn their ballot in at any of these locations.

  • You can check your polling place and your registration status at this link.

  • Yes! You will go to the polling place for your precinct and tell them you need to register to vote. You will need to bring a valid photo ID and a proof of residency (like a utility bill, lease, or bank statement with your address).

  • If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to bring an ID. You can sign an affidavit instead of providing an ID.

If you’re not already registered and will be registering at the polls, bring a valid photo ID and proof of residency.

  • You can check the status of your absentee ballot here.

  • The county will start mailing ballots on October 10! Ballots will be sent out on a rolling basis as voters request them. If you request your ballot after October 10, you should expect to receive your ballot in 7-10 days after requesting it.

This year, council elections are by district.

It’s so important that we have a City Council that wants to expand on the progress we’ve made in the last several years. In two districts, no challengers filed, so Luci Willits and Jimmy Hallyburton were declared “elected”. If you’re in the other districts, I’m encouraging you to vote for these wonderful young leaders who are committed to making sure Boise is a city for everyone:

Redistricting FAQs:

  • During the 2020 legislative session, the State passed a bill (HB413) requiring cities with populations over 100,000 people to create districts for City Council elections.

  • Candidate filings for municipal races don’t open until August 28 and close on September 8. Candidates can announce beforehand, but we’ll have the full list on September 8.

  • Polling locations might have changed. You can click here to confirm your polling place. (Make sure to check back closer to the election for updates!)
